More about me (my health interests and reasons for joining WEGO Health)

It took me a long time to warm up to the title Health Activist, but I've slowly come around to it. :) Becoming an active part of my own health care team led me to participation and research online, and eventually to WEGO Health!

Migraine attacks have been a part of my life for approximately 30 yrs. I have intractable Migraine with and without auras, which are usually very profound and disabling, as well as Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalgias which include Hemicrania Continua and Chronic Cluster Headache. I also live with Raynaud's, Lupus, Auto-immune Thyroid Disease, Insulin Resistance and a rare movement disorder called Dystonia which complicates my treatment. It's been a long road so, I have experience as a patient of Allopathic, Osteopathic, Chiropractic, Homeopathic and Complementary Medicine practitioners throughout the mid-western United States.

My home is in the country surrounded by the beautiful, picturesque rolling hills of Northeast Missouri where I live with my husband, occasionally my 2 semi-grown children and several pets

Although my health issues have forced me to retire from my jobs as both an equine reproduction manager and emergency dispatcher, I strive to maintain a positive attitude and sense of humor, and choose to use my unique experiences to help educate others as well as myself in our journey toward optimal health for better living.

Aphasia awareness

Do you know that feeling you get when you can't remember the name of an old teacher, or put a name to the face of a person walking toward you? Some people struggle with that feeling with every word they attempt to speak.

For a rare few, Migraine aura can result in the debilitating inability to communicate. Fortunately for Migraineurs, it is usually not permanent unless damage occurs. For others that have suffered stroke or other brain injuries or damage, Aphasia is a new way of life for them an… Continue

Cambia - New Migraine medication is approved

Cambia was approved June 17, 2009 by the FDA for use in the United States for the treatment of Migraine. It does not prevent nor lessen the number of attacks, but is designed to treat one already in progress. Cambia comes as a flavored powder to be mixed with water to form a solution which is drunk by the patient, preferably on an empty stomach.

Drugs.com reports that, "In randomized clinical trials, Cambia was shown to be effective not only in mig… Continue

Order your own lab work - a coupon

Lab work does not necessarily mean taking the time out of the week for a doctor's office visit only to hear that you'll need another one for the results. Lab work doesn't necessarily mean huge lab bills either. You have options of which you or your doctor may not be aware.

There are many places you can go online to have your lab work ordered and tested. Many offer physician's consults when the results are in as well. Today, I received a coupon and wanted to share it with you:… Continue

Your medicine choices - suppositories

*pill

This post is going to talk frankly about suppositories and compounded suppositories.

They can SAY all they want: migraines are totally triggered by stress.

Good luck with the transition....I am sure in a few months you will be wondering why you ever thought this was stressful ;)

Sweating is always good, but I also think the yoga makes me focus on myself for an hour and a half...no exceptions...easy to put yourself last and unfortunately, your health can suffer as a result.

BTW, your horse looks like a unicorn! I did a double take of you profile pic! Love horses too, I'm sure riding is very therapeutic.

Hi Ellen, Thanks for introducing yourself. Does sound like you've had a tough go of it...congrats on your achievements.

Bikram Yoga worked great for me because it is taught in a heated room (great for loosening tight joints/muscles) and it does not involve a lot of "downward dogs"...pain from bearing weight on my hands and wrists really prevented me from doing other forms of yoga. Bikram can be really hard at first to get used to (some people feel sick and dizzy) because of the 100+ temperature, but it is worth sticking with it. I'm lucky to be at a point where I don't need any medication to manage my RA symptoms. I think I have to attribute a lot of my success to Bikram yoga.

Love the songs, Ellen. Hope to make the webinar for Twitter tomorrow...if doc appt isn't too long. It's follow-up from MRI cerv spine under anesthesia last Fri. I was able to view the CD on my computer yesterday. From past MRIs & doc explanations, it sure looks 'scary'. Don't know what this new doc can offer since I've been told by at least 6 neurosurgeons & orthopedic surg's that I am no candidate for fusion due to severe spasms in my neck muscles. I haven't been able to find a combo of meds to relieve my symptoms for more than 20 yrs now. I've never been tested for DYT1 gene or dopomine deficiency. What should I ask for? This doc is a spine specialist referred by my pain doc [who is at a loss how to treat me now]. I don't have a neurologist now...last one I saw offered 'nothing' except to try & alleviate fibro pain, etc. with Lyrica & Skelaxin...of course, no relief there either. I read that those 2 are contraindicated for ST/CD anyway. So what should I ask for? It's been in the early years that I took Artane, Baclofen, Klonopin, Valium, Oxycodone, Methadone, Morphine, Flexeril, Duragesic patch & on & on it goes. Since I had no definitive relief from those my current pain doc will not re-prescribe any of them. I was taking so many at one time that I couldn't tell if ANYTHING helped or not. Finally last fall I began to d/c all 15 meds I was taking. Worst withdrawal was Klonopin...that Benzo almost killed me...but while I was taking it [until I had to keep increasing doses] helped me more than anything else along with Oxy. Now they won't touch me with Klon or narcotics. I'm presently taking SOMA & Tramadol with Xanax...which doesn't help either. I do receive steroid trigger point injections in my neck about ev month...very little relief there either. I'm just at a loss as to what to ask for. There is not a movement disorder spec in my area & I have no one to drive me elsewhere.
Any suggestions? Thanks, Ellen. Hope you're having a great day.

Migraines have been quietly present - not as bad as they usually are. I have been pretty good about taking my meds early, getting my botox and decompressing when I feel like my stress level is shooting through the stratosphere.

How are you?
