Wendy, thanks for calling out an antiquated, overly general, and stigmatized term; dementia belongs on the trash heap with "senile." In my experience - both personal and as part of the WEGO Health community - dementia is also so general as to be u...

Applying the word "Alzheimer's" to somone close to you can be uncomfortable, even if the signs, or symptoms, have been adding up for some time. It's much easier to gloss over strange behavior: "Oh, Mom's just getting older."Or to rationalize: "Wel...

More about me (my health interests and reasons for joining WEGO Health)
Hello everyone. I am delighted to be a Wego family member! I grew up in New Jersey, got my BS. and Masters in Education and a Masters in English in the U.S and England. I married, taught school and worked for the National Health System while living in England and now reside west of Boston with my Brit husband, daughter and 5 Siamese cats. My 15 year career in medical education has focused on the field of standardized patients (lay people trained to teach and evaluate medical trainees). I serve on faculty as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at a New England medical school and work with students and faculty at Harvard Medical School, Boston University, Tufts School of Medicine and UMASS Medical School. My service also includes case writing with the National Board of Medical Examiners to develop test material for US medical licensure exams. I get great joy from presenting research and giving workshops on simulation and standardized patient methodology at conferences on medical education. My passions include family, supporting animal care, adoption and training; cooking; Puccini operas; Prokofieff music and our little cottage on Cape Cod. My work with Wego is an extension of my devotion to patient education through sharing resources and personal experience. I look forward to meeting you all.

Alzheimer's in other Cultures

I have been most fortunate in my lifetime to have studied and lived in a few different countries and traveled throughout Europe, the (then) Soviet Union and parts of North Africa. This afforded me the opportunity to observe different family structures and especially observed different ways cultures treat their elderly. As we have been focused on Alzheimer's in our WEGO group, I wanted to dig deeper and learn how other cultures perceive and manage dementia in the family unit.

Because we have suc… Continue

Alzheimer's politics

Many of us are energized by the approaching elections. An admitted political junkie, I set out to clarify what each presidential candidate is pledging to the Alzheimer’s community.

Eric J. Hall of Alzheimer’s Foundation of America met this summer with domestic policy staff from the McCain and Obama campaigns. In his article on Health Central, Hall challenged the incoming administration to take steps toward earlier diagnosis and treatment; to enhance better long-term care; to create better quali… Continue

Alzheimer’s Caregivers: Webinars!

If you read my last blog, you will know that in addition to getting a newsletter out to those of you interested in Alzheimer's news and resources, I would also like to create some "webinars" for you. These are seminars you can tune into right over a cup of tea and the internet in the warmth and comfort of your home base! Each webinar focuses on one topic, so those of you with interest in a specific area can get information you need by participating. To that end, we at Wego are reaching out to yo… Continue

Helping caregivers help each other

Many of you have joined WEGO Health’s Alzheimer’s Disease Community seeking resources, reassurance and hope from other caregivers, patients and advocates. I’m here in the midst of it all, listening to your concerns and questions, and helping point you in the right direction.

My involvement with Alzheimer’s is painted with a broad brush. As a medical educator, I’m continually tracking the latest advances in Alzheimer’s diagnosis and treatment. There’s so much going on, from Capital Hill proceedi… Continue

Hi Wendy! Are you still at Tufts Med School? I work with some of the students there on doctor-patient communications! It's a great school.

Hi, Wendy!

I hope you don't mind, but I provided a link in one of my discussions in the mental health group to your blog post "Beware of the Black Box!". My issue seemed to parallel yours, but perhaps in a slightly different way. Thanks for all your research and information!
