Janeen Allergy Bloggers: Resources to share with the newly diagnosed

My son was diagnosed with his food allergies at 10 months of age. When the allergist told me that he was allergic to wheat, rye, barley, oat, eggs, dairy, peanuts and tree nuts my first thought was "What am I going to feed this child"? I was so lost and so scared and I had no idea what to do. No one else I knew had a food allergy child and I didn't know where to turn. Unfortunately, as wonderful as our allergist is, he is not very helpful in this area. He showed me pamphlets from… Continue

Janeen Asthma Bloggers: Share your tips for safe holiday travel

Over the river and through the woods can be a wonderful adventure, unless you suffer from asthma. Once you leave your safe, comfortable environment, triggers may lurk all around you. Last year I wrote Surviving the holidays with allergies. Many of these suggestions also apply to asthma sufferers. 1. Know your triggers and try to avoid. If pets are your trigger, you may need to avoid a home that has pets.… Continue

Janeen Allergic rhinitis and asthma: Does allergic rhinitis increase the risk of asthma?

While reading this article by Medical News Today today I came across an interesting statement and one that holds very true for my son: "'Allergic rhinitis has been shown to increase the risk of asthma three-fold, and investigators found that when rhinitis began in the first year of life, the development of asthma by age 6 was twice as high as when it started after the first year,' Dr. Pawankar said". Really… Continue

Janeen Allergies, Asthma and the upcoming holiday season

The holidays are coming! There are many tell-tale signs: Commercials are on TV showing families sitting around the table enjoying holiday festivities, Christmas music is playing over the speakers in stores to inspire shoppers, holiday decorations and displays are set up in stores, and recipes are spread out all over my kitchen counters. My counters are a disaster and will probably stay that way until the first of the year. I am trying to put together safe, allergen friendly menus for Thanksgivin… Continue

Janeen Asthma and Allergy Community: What's your opinion on the H1N1 virus?

I have to tell you that as a mother and especially as the mother of an asthmatic, I'm concerned. I'm also a bit ticked off. No matter who you talk to, everyone has a different opinion as to how severe this flu actually is, and whether or not you and your children should get the vaccine and who is actually at the greatest risk. I know two people in the medical field (one is a surgical nurse and one is studying to be a doctor) and both have opposite opinions. The media says one thing, the governm… Continue

Janeen Asthma and Allergy Bloggers: Tips for surviving the flu season with asthma?

Flu season is upon us. While the debate rages on whether we should or should not get the flu shot, even if you do get the shot the likelihood of you getting some strain of the flu or a virus is still pretty high. When you do get sick, what are your best tips to make you feel better? 1. When my son gets sick and his asthma flairs up the best thing we can do is to make him as comfortable as possible. That usually means warm jammies, clean bedding, and all of his favorite comfort foods. 2. His as… Continue

Janeen Is there a connection between allergies and migraines?

I know that changes in seasons trigger my migraines. I know that changes in weather trigger my migraines. But can seasonal allergies have an affect on my migraines? I've made it a point to walk/jog at least 3 days a week after the dropping the children off at school. I was not in the mood today and I wasn't feeling 100% but I decided to push myself to do it anyway. I decided that I would jog most if not all of 3 miles today. After a rough start, I seemed to settle into a nice pace. But I did no… Continue

Janeen Can someone explain to me why food allergies are so polarizing?

Because I just don't get it. I've never asked for anything to be "banned" for my son and I do all of the cooking and buying and watch dogging. His father and I try to teach him to advocate for himself. We've not asked for many special considerations (unless you count no play doh in the classroom). But articles like these or… Continue

Janeen Allergy to insect stings: a summer time hazard

Luckily, no one in our family has a severe or anaphylactic reaction to insect stings. My mother says she does, but I've never seen it and I suspect that she has localized allergic reactions like I do (or I'm sure that someone would have given her epinephrine to carry at some point in her life). Signs of anaphylaxis from a stinging insect are: Difficulty breathing, dizziness, shortness of breath, fainting, swelling of the mouth or tongue, difficulty speaking. These symptoms can be deadly. It's i… Continue

Sarah This one time ... in fifth grade ...

... I got kicked out of the classroom for sneezing 63 times in a row. I kept a penciled tally on the desk. I became quite the distraction and was asked to leave. Mrs. S never opened the window while they were mowing the field again. Ever. No matter how hot it was. I finally feel like it's the height of Oregon allergy season; I can't stop sneezing, I've gone through an entire box of Kleenex this week, food doesn't taste right and not even menthol spray can clear out my left nostril. I am allergi… Continue
