I recently came across an
article in Parade magazine that lists potential superfoods that just might be worth fitting into a healthy diet. Their nutrient-packed, flavor-filled super six includes nuts, grass-fed beef, olive oil, raw honey and blackstrap molasses, coconut milk and cinnamon.
What exactly is a superfood? There is not an exact definition for a
superfood; however, the term generally refers to foods and/or drinks that offer disease-fighting benefits in addition to what is needed for basic nutritional needs. While some superfoods, like fruits, vegetables, meat and fish, are touted as superfoods due to what we know from
scientific research, others are labeled as such without much evidence to support the use of the added super prefix.
Indeed you might find a wide variety of potential superfoods. There are foods claimed to offer specific benefits for
women,
graceful aging,
healthy hair,
heart disease,
stress and even
romance. You might come across some
unusual superfoods with proposed health benefits as well. Alligator or crocodile meat, anyone?
As I begin to embark on my own
personal journey for diabetes prevention, I couldn’t help but to ponder my own top choices. I will have to say that green tea, salmon, tilapia, baked chicken, apples, broccoli, and carrots are just some of my top superfood picks.
Reader’s digest offers their take on some
foods that might be beneficial for diabetes management, and WEGO Health has a fantastic page on
